Bay AreaThe San Francisco Bay Area, also known as the Bay Area, is a geographically diverse metropolitan area that surrounds the San Francisco Bay in Northern California. Home to more than seven million people, it is composed of cities, towns, military bases, airports, and associated regional, state, and national parks sprawled over nine counties (ten, according to some agencies) and connected by a massive network of roads, highways, railroads, and commuter rail. The Bay Area, unlike the typical metropolitan area, contains several distinct urban and suburban centers. While San Jose is the largest city in the Bay Area (having surpassed San Francisco in the 1990 census) and the tenth largest city in America, for most of its history San Francisco was the most populous city, and remains the focal point and the major cultural center in the region. With an estimated population of 7,168,176* as of 2005, the San Jose sjno -San Francisco-Oakland oakm Combined Statistical Area (as defined by the United States Census Bureau) is the sixth-largest consolidated metropolitan area in the United States, behind New York–Newark–Bridgeport, Los Angeles–Long Beach–Riverside, Chicago–Naperville–Michigan City, Washington–Baltimore–Northern Virginia and Boston–Worcester–Manchester. (This figure includes the nine counties traditionally included in the definition of the Bay Area, plus Santa Cruz County (see below for discussion on that county's inclusion in the Bay Area) and San Benito County (which is included in the San Jose metropolitan area definition).) |
